Getting off the island of life

How is it we can be surrounded by people and feel totally alone?  So often I have heard this from clients and felt it in my own life.  I have often been fascinated with how people connect both to others and to themselves.  Watching as people ebb and flow in and out of tune with what feels like a deep rhythm and joy of life has given me so much insight into the plight of the human experience.  I have seen two paths emerge, one veering toward joy and abundance and one towards isolation and suffering.  It seems to me that we all have a small quiet voice deep within us that beckons us to remain true to our core.  When we listen and have the courage to follow that voice with action, it seems to lead towards adventure and mystery and a life well lived.  When we choose to ignore and silence the urging of that guide, we find ourselves lost in the abyss of darkness and suffering of isolation.  I believe that as we fall asleep to the whisperings of our soul we lose the sense of who we are and what we are here for and thus find ourselves all alone on our self-imposed island, disconnected from the things that bring us closer to life and others.
To begin the journey to return to ourselves is to depart from the island and move forward into the unknown horizon of choppy waters.  Each act of courage to press into the vast sea and leave the certainty of the shore builds upon itself, and as the shore disappears from sight, we find that we were built to be at sea.  Built for the vast expanse and the distant horizon.  Built for the storms that blow in.  Built for the silent glory of sunrise and sunset. Built to move port to port reveling in the distinct and unique experience of the varying encounters with others.  The longer we are at sea, the stronger the enjoyment of being in port.  This natural life of departing and returning allows the silence and solitude of the high seas to purge the noise and turmoil of port in order to return the soul to the compass of Self.  If we can practice this style of living in our day to day lives, then we can tune our existence to delicate balance of connection to our deepest self and others.  May each of us find ourselves at sea so we can remain ourselves in port.
