FEAR AND THE ART OF SURRENDER
So many of us trudge through the day feeling not only separate but also totally alone. I have found that to be especially prevalent amongst the western American man. We were raised on the mantras of toughen up, suck it up, don't be a pussy and so we’ve forgotten how to extend a vulnerable hand in request of communion. The values of independence, fortitude, success and autonomy shadow the soul’s values of truth, unity, compassion and love. Often to think of surrender is to think of defeat, loss. Loss that solidifies that inadequacy of our existence. And so we continue to fight wearing masks to veil the pain that lies beneath the surface. We numb the echos of terror in alcohol, money, competition and sex. The warrior has been let loose to wage war with no guidance from the magician or lover to answer the why..
As fear from the soul gremlins beckon us toward accomplishment and the science of more, the art of surrender whispers the promise found in silence, stillness and solitude. Alone in the moment of human being we are able to understand the deeps of calling to be human doings. These moments in the garden of the spirit fill our cups and tune our hearts to the truth of who we are. Only with these daily strolls through the garden can we enjoy the journey of noise in the busyness of our world because in that garden we discover the truth of existence… we aren’t alone. As we surrender control of our circumstances we allow the mystery of a participating universe to display its magic and begin the process of dismantling the illusion of fear. The joy found in the art of surrender comes from discovering that the antidote to fear, love, is everywhere all the time wrapping you in its arms, holding you in an eternal embrace.
